Early thoughts on Kitsune Tails
I've been playing some unpolished games the last week-ish. This is one of them. Playing next to Haunted Castle Revisted (a 16:9 retro-ish remake of an old arcade 'vania... sorta.) and Victory Heat Rally (a 16:9 super scaler racer) gets a little weird. HCR feels like it fits the frame just fine, sometimes a 4:3 game with the ability to look further. VHR feels normal-ish. I was worried the field of view was going to make me super motion sick.
Kitsune Tails so far has felt like some levels were designed for a 4:3 screen and is cropped in to 16:9. Stuff slightly off screen above and below. Not even just vertical scrolling levels. Some Horizontal scrolling sections it feels like there's something below and some are just really long death pits. The scale of all the things on screen just feels cramped. It doesn't help that sometimes enemy placement and movement is perfect and you can get a rhythm. Sometimes though, it feels like I'm accidentally doing the Mario thing where it counts as a stomp while going up at an angle. I do sometimes like the idea of a Mario type game not having lives/game overs, but there are a few parts that feel untuned. There's no life limit or continues to force smoother design because you can just die and try again. Ghost placement just hugging you to death with no escape? try again. Gonna be a lot of foxgirl corpses in my playthrough. Ah well. I'll just slowly play the gay fox girl game. This doesn't mean I dislike the game, to be fair. I'm just jotting down what I didn't like to compare later.
Oh also, this was another game of recent memory where on pc I turned off the vsync in-game and let the driver vsync it. Less judder. I do wonder if I should've instead limited fps in the driver and let vrr/gsync handle it.
